As a Horse Photographer, I typically enjoy Horse Movies as well. I have to turn and cover my eyes when something bad happens but a good cry and a story-line of a powerful overcoming of some impossible thing is just the epic film I love! There have been many great Horse Movies, but here’s a list of some of my favorites!
Secretariat has to be one of my all time favorite horse movies. Last year we traveled to Kentucky and visited Claiborne Farms, the resting place of Secretariat. I’m always so moved and inspired by the movie and the soundtrack. I made a great playlist that we enjoyed in the rental car with many top horse movie theme songs.

2020 release of Dream Horse is another favorite “The film tells the inspiring true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely race horse bred by small town bartender, Jan Vokes”. The lead role stars Toni Collette, and I always enjoy her acting talents. This is uplifting but certainly has it’s shares of ups and downs as well. So many people trusting in a Horse to lift their lives. Horses do indeed lift peoples lives, in the movies and in real life. I’m sure many horses aided in people getting through the initial part of the Covid Pandemic and lockdowns.
There’s many more epic powerful Horse movies out there where the horse overcomes all odds and wins the “prize” or the “race””: Secretariat, Hidalgo, Sea Biscuit, Phar Lap. Those are great too.
I also have enjoyed some of the documentaries like Unbranded, Wild Horse Wild Ride and Buck. Recently I watched a documentary on Netflix, My Heroes were Cowboys. The film details the life and work of Hollywood horse trainer, Robin Wiltshire. In the movie he was quoted saying “when they’re running, they look like they should have wings”. The film depicted his love and respect for horses so much. To learn more about Robin visit his website https://www.turtleranch.org/about
