Skull Valley General Store adds Horse and Cowboy gifts

Skull Valley General Store- Jody L. Miller Horse PhotographySkull Valley General Store is just 12 miles from Prescott, Arizona but you would think it was further.  Skull Valley, Arizona is a very very small town.  The town’s population can’t be more than 1000 people (the 2003 census reported 525). The store was built in 1916 and retains much of its original flavor, including the squeaky floors and the warmth that comes with a sense of belonging. Those who long to return to the good ol’ days will find the store on Iron Springs Road, just across the street from the Skull Valley Service Station.

Skull Valley, Arizona has a small farmers market every Friday morning, train tracks that run right through town, a school that was built in the 1920’s, a small post office and the shell of a building known as the Skull Valley Cafe- which is now closed. The old service station is an antique store.

The closest convenience store is in Prescott, so having the Skull Valley General Store reopened is a welcomed thing for the town’s residents.  They offer cold drinks and other refreshments. The store also attracts many travelers on the weekends- as this is a popular route for motorbikes, cyclists and other travelers taking the “back road” to Prescott.

Skull Valley was home to George Phippen (1915–1966), a well known western artist, co-founder and first president of the Cowboy Artists of America.

Earlier this year, KoRenda Smuin and her family leased the Skull Valley General Store and attached home in hopes of reviving this nostalgic old building.  KoRenda is an artist and reached out to the Prescott art community looking for folks to consign their artwork for sale in the Skull Valley General Store. The store is now home to over a dozen local artists offering their work.

Cowboy and Horse themed gifts at Skull Valley General Store

The Skull Valley General Store offers small 4 x 4 horse photo coasters, some small 5 x 7 matted prints and some note cards. As the holiday season gets closer, I may be adding a few more small gift items to the offering.

Amazing cinnamon buns! from Trip Advisor

The morning I was there to restock my horsey gift items, there were several people sitting around the small table enjoying freshly baked cinnamon rolls and coffee.  Since, I’m eating a lectin free diet- the cinnamon rolls were not compliant but I certainly saw several happy faces eating and sharing them! Some day…

Whether you need a refreshing cold drink, a yummy cinnamon roll or some wonderful local art- the Skull Valley General Store is a great stop along the back roads of Arizona.

  1. You are a wonderful human, Jody. What a pleasure having your beautiful artworks in the store. Folks like you are the reason I love it here.

  2. Jody IS a wonderful human. I write pet memoirs and recently got published an awesome book about 38 super women (a lot local) who tell me their stories. Jody has been very supportive in sharing and networking. Not everyone does that. GIRLS CAN BE COWBOYS TOO! is the name of the new book.
