Photographing Horses different body parts

Photographing horses different body parts can be fun and exciting and sometimes challenging.

Just like any other photographer, a horse photographer is always looking for variety when choosing what and where to photograph horses.  I have my favorite breeds and favorite body parts but I also notice that I look for a connection with the individual horse to capture that “great” photo.  I will analyze all their body parts and features and see what I like the most, then I will feature that in the horse photo.  Most of this happens in just a few seconds and barely with me noticing that it’s happening.  It’s like the quick check you give another person when you first meet them to determine your gut feeling about them.

I was reading an article on 8 things people decide about you in the first 30 seconds.

  1. Are you trustworthy
  2. If you’re high status
  3. If you’re straight or gay
  4. If you’re smart
  5. If you’re successful
  6. If you’re dominant
  7. If you’re promiscuous
  8. If you’re adventurous

Photographing Horse eyes

photographing horse eyes- jody l miller photographyAs many of you already know- my first horse love was a Bay Arabian Horse named Zarod.  This horse had incredibly expressive eyes- big, brown and could see right into your heart.  I still make that horse eye connection and have photographed the horses eye on every photo shoot possible.

Photographing Horse necks

The strength and curve and length of a horses neck is also interesting to photograph. From any angle, the horses neck is a beautiful body part to photograph.

The Horse’s Neck is a cocktail-A cooler cocktail named for its unusually long, curly garnish.

A photograph of the neck of the horse can show the horses muscles and strength. Some horses necks are adorned with a beautiful long flowing mane like the forelock and mane on this Paso Fino Stallion below.

Photographing Horse legs

I have yet to photograph a Gypsy Vanner Horse with the long feathering hair on it’s legs.  “Hair: feather beginning at the knees in front and at or near the hocks in the rear that extends over the front of the hooves, ample to abundant mane and tail. Ideal hair is straight & silky.”  Sounds like an ad for shampoo.  As far as photographing horse legs, Xander the Freisian Stallion has thundering hooves in the photo below, “Hooves in m’ocean”. This image was taken on the beach in Florence Oregon as this gorgeous black stallion ran through the breaking waves of the Pacific Ocean.
