Photographing at a Race Track

Brooklyn horse photographer takes New Jersey race horse photo !

If a horse neighs in New Jersey, does it have an accent?

All sorts of questions are running through my head recently .  Some are silly because I am just so darn excited about a new commissioned shoot that I can’t hardly stand it and so my mind is just having fun with thinking about it .  Some questions are logistical, “How exactly will I photograph this racehorse?” “Will I have a grassy area to photograph her or will it just be in the paddock and stall areas?”  I have shot at racetracks before, but only for my own entertainment.

I have some research to do about  Monmouth Park before I get there and I am sure a lot more questions to ask that will have more to do with the actual photographing of this young filly for her owners .

Brooklyn Horse Photographer

Brooklyn Horse Photographer Jody L. MillerRight now all I can think about is that I am actually getting to do a photo shoot with an up and coming race horse !  I am thrilled !  I was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.  and I love the idea my first race horse commissioned photo shoot being so close to my start .  I feel like it has such a nice synchronicity to it !

Commissions to me are a lot of fun for me in that I really get to capture the horse that the owner knows personality wise, in photographs that may be used to sell the horse, advertise the horse, or go in some other promotional materials as well as be the photograph that they keep for memorabilia .

I am eager to stake out the backdrop, to meet the owners and trainers there and see what their ideas are about the shoot .  Whatever it is, I am sure that it will be fun to meet her and capture her personality as she moves around from one spot to another .  I don’t yet know if I will be photographing her exercising on the track or not, but that would certainly be a thrilling adventure if I do get to do that too !

It will be in May, so I have a lot to research about the area and track before hand, as I said earlier .  Famous racehorse photos are something I will probably look up as well for some inspiration about angles, lighting and capturing their personality quirks too .  I will hopefully be able to share a shot or two with you on here and talk about it on the other side of it, I am expecting to still be just as excited about it !

A Brooklyn born photographer takes photos of a New Jersey racehorse, I’m pinching myself .  How does it get any better than that ?!

Stay tuned for more on this post for sure!
