Revealing the femininity of the Horse

Recently an admirer of my equine fine art photography told that I captured the femininity of the horse.

I have always known that my equine fine art photography focused more on the tender, the contemplative and the soul of a horse.  My horse images are filled with emotion, the emotion of my connection to the horse seeps to the surface of my images.  I had not thought about how they may translate into a more feminine reflection until she made that comment.

Christa Dowling writes “Art of any form is neither feminine nor masculine, but may contain elements of each and both.” and “Contemplating or questing if ‘art is feminine’ it also means to say… it is receptive, nurturing, open and creative…then the answer could often be YES. However one defines art…being either feminine or masculine …and if masculine implies assertive, aggressive, action oriented and directive-an affirmative answer could often apply to the question “Is Art Masculine?”

Tender moment with Mare and Foal

together may lead the viewer to believe it’s a mare and foal and be viewed as tenderness and mothering however, those traits of being tender and mothering can be associated with the male species as well.

Horses inherently understand people better than most other animals do, displaying tremendous sensitivity to even the most subtle eye and body movements.  Sensitivity is typically viewed as a more feminine characteristic, therefore I can see why someone could make the statement that my horse art is more feminine than masculine regardless of the gender of the horse in the photograph.

No two horses are the same but there is a similarity in my equine fine art photographs.  As an artist I hope you can sense your own feelings of strength, of freedom, beauty, aliveness, passion, inspiration, self- assurance, and poise, well up within you as you look at my work. This is what comes to life within me when I look at these majestic animals regardless of their sex.  I hope you share that feeling. It is my goal that you feel connected through my photographs and that you discover the sense of spirit that awaits you in your own life. This is my brand. This is what I intend for you to recognize when you see my photography, even before you look for my signature.
